Hinduism (9-12th century)[]
Most Hindus are followers of the principal gods Shiva, Vishnu or Shakti. Hinduism was restored to Khmer after the death of Indravarman II. Jayarvarman VIII who was a Hindu iconist destroyed images and statues of Buddha and replaced them with Hindu shrines. He reestablished the temple Bayon dedicated to Shiva. He cast a 3.6 meter statue of Buddha down into the bottom of a well. He replaced statues of Buddha with lingams (representation of Shiva)
Mahayana Buddhism (end of 12th century)[]
King Jayarvarman VII departed from his previous ancestor's religion. He made Buddhism the state religion. He constructed the temple Bayonm in the middle of Angkor Thom. The faces on the temple show the four fsublime states of mind: Kindness, Compassion,Sympathetic Joy and Equanimity. They believed it was possible to reach heaven in a single life.
